Another episode of Panty and Stocking premiered over the weekend, this one containing three shorts. I enjoyed them mostly because I continue to like the characters but most of its parodies amounted to little more than collections of references. The first season was kind of like that, too, though I remember their Transformers parody being one of the best episodes. That was because they actually went somewhere with the concept instead of just showing Transformers drawn in the show's style.

This new episode features references to The Mandalorian, Pitch Perfect, and The Fast and the Furious. Of those, I'm pretty sure The Fast and the Furious is the only one well known in Japan, where the series goes by the title Wild Speed. The Mandalorian parody features Stocking and one of the demon sisters, Scanty, enrolling in a samurai dojo which seems mainly designed for weebs (foreigners who are obsessed with Japanese culture), a group the show seems to enjoy mocking this season. I thought this was the funniest line from the short, in which the "samurai sensei" tells his students that catching a fly with chopsticks is a sure sign of samurai skill.



The guy's dog ends up being Grogu/Baby Yoda. Again, it's all just there, it doesn't seem to be making a comment about The Mandalorian or Star Wars.

The Pitch Perfect parody, called "Bitch Perfect", was my favourite of the three. Panty and Stocking and the demon sisters compete over how many likes they can get from narcissistic posts to an app reminiscent of TikTok or Instagram. The app ends up being a ghost, which I really liked.

I did not sleep worth shit last night. I just could not fall asleep. I tried listening to music, I tried doing meditation, I tried more drugs, but I just could not. Finally, I dozed off around 2:30 am. I get up at 5:30, so that wasn't a whole lot. I was having anxiety before bed, and I guess the pills and emotional support Ghost that I listened to did not help. Tomorrow, I'll take my pills a bit earlier and see if that helps.

Tonight I will take my pills earlier, and put down everything to try to settle my brain. Sometimes that works, sometimes no.

Today will be a busy day at work, and I am not here for it. I will deal, but by 4:30, I'll be very tired. Looking forward to the boss seeing what I got done on the weekend. I feel like it's pretty impressive, so we'll see what he thinks.

I made grown up mac and cheese last night, inspired by my Strixhaven Game, where we had a great discussion about Locatelli Romano cheese. (They were right, it's excellent cheese). We were going to have chicken with it, but the chicken wasn't quite ready, so we just ate the mac and cheese. It was very tasty and satisfying. The chicken will be eaten tonight. Maybe I'll try making some pie crust and make little chicken pot pies. I have celery and carrots and onions. That could be tasty.

The higher dose of Prozac seems to be helping Yoda some. He actually let us sit in the living room without barking. We might be able to watch a movie now and then. ( I still haven't seen Old Guard 2.)

Tomorrow, I think it's supposed to be 98 degrees, so I'll see if I want to go to the Farmer's market. I haven't been in a few weeks, but I'd like to get some vegetables for the week.

And then Wednesday is payday, so I have to pay a couple of bills. Nothing exciting, just the electric and the internet and phone. Also I have to pay on the sofas. Another few months, and I think they'll be ours. Okay, I looked and we have more than a few months. Whoops. Might start paying a bit more on that.

Next month, I get my payout for referring a friend. After taxes, it'll probably be about $750. I'm debating what to use it for. A nice brunch, definitely. Aside from that, I don't know. Probably just my hair. That's high upkeep. Though I thought about getting a tattoo. I just don't know what.

Okay, time to go forth and get myself together for work. Ugh. And to put some eggs on to boil for breakfast. Everyone have the best Monday that you can Monday!

I keep intending to post and then forgetting to do so. Nothing much is going on. I pan-fried a steak for dinner tonight and it was delicious but it also reminded me why I do it so infrequently - the smoke condition was intense and ongoing despite 2 fans going and the smell is going to linger. But I ate it with a nice arugula salad and it was good.

Battled a sinus headache from hell today - I blame the barometric pressure, which couldn't make up its mind - did it want to rain or not rain? Apparently not rain. Also, while the air quality was much better today - the humidity was at 77% and it felt like walking through a sauna, so still hard to breath? (Air Quality dropped down from the semi-dangerous and smokey 138 to 100 (pesky Canadian Wildfires ) horrible in upstate NY as well - at least I have the water to dissipate it a bit. )

Mother got to see Mt. Rainer and sent photos. I managed to download one and posted it to FB (private) - so hopefully you can see it? I really wish DW would let me upload photos from my computer or phone, but alas, no. Maybe I should join Pillowfort just to upload photos from? Instagram is useless in this regard. (Actually Instagram annoys me - it appears to be little more than a marketing and advertising outlet for people. Everyone uses it to market or promote themselves?)



Mother is enjoying her vacation from her island visiting relatives. The relatives she's visiting are her closest blood relations, and the ones she talks to incessantly on the phone.

She called me - gave me an update on what she was doing and everyone else was doing, then said goodbye and hung up.

I slept better the last two nights, then I had on Thursday, so feel a bit more rested. Also working on the blood sugar - discovered certain things make it go high (grains of any type, and anything high in sugar content), while other things don't (veggies, eggs, fruit, seafood, fish, nuts, seeds). My digestive system seems to be happier when my blood sugar is higher - which is annoying.

I'm kind of frustrated. But maybe I can make it work? I do not want to take insulin or shots of any kind - I have issues with "needles" - it's why I don't sew. Me and needles are unmixy things.

Due to sinus headache from hell - which lasted for four hours - I just watched television. Reading was out of the question. Did manage to work on my novel a bit.

Read something online recently - that learning to control emotions was important, also it was important to remember that what other people do, think, or say is not as important as what you do, think or say. True to an extent. Except to the degree in which it can directly affect one's own life?

Television shows watched today?

Untamed - a limited mystery series on Netflix, not many episodes, maybe four or five if that. I spun through it pretty quickly, and still managed to take a walk, pick up groceries, listen to an audio book, talk to mother, go through my mail, clean up a bit of clutter, fix breakfast and lunch, and watch some of a Billy Joel documentary.

It's a bit on the dark side, and I felt a tad rushed in places. But overall compelling and good. Scratched an itch. I'm in the mood for dark gritty mysteries solved by PI's or cops, and kind of twisty like a thriller in cool locals right now. I may start watching Big Sky Country on Hulu or Paradise. If you have any limited series or mystery series recs - that fit this type of format, gritty detective mystery arc, not serial killer, that takes place over a series of episodes (kind of like the old Prime Suspect or Long Mire or Dark Winds...) - rec away.

I'd liked this - it stars Eric Bana and Sam Neill, and is about a Federal law enforcement agent assigned to Yosemite Park, who is solving the case of a young woman who fell from El Capitan. There are other mysteries entangled with it, that may or may not be directly involved with her death. It's character driven, and kind of gritty, with great scenery. Yosemite is beautiful.

Billy Joel Documentary - got rec'd to me by four people, including a close friend. So decided to give it a whirl. It's good. But long. So will watch in snippets dragging it out. I'm learning stuff I did not know about Billy Joel - such as - he was in four different bands before he began truly writing his own music. One was a heavy metal band called Attila, which broke up when he had an affair with his band mate's wife, then was homeless, and tried to commit suicide twice, almost succeeded. The doc starts out, with him stating that he discovered that one learns best by failure, and recovery. Failing and trying again. He may have a point.

Off to make dinner. Headache is blissfully gone along with sinus issues. Most likely because I took a generic form of Excedrin, and an Allegra. The combination of the two - nipped it in the bud. Difference between sinus headache and migraine? I can get rid of a sinus headache, also if I don't get rid of it - it will become a vertigo headache, which is never good.

She Came In Through a Magic Window

A beautiful but clumsy young witch seeks a human ear to stay in the human realm in 1972's The Girl on the Broomstick (Dívka na koštěti). Petra Černocká stars as Saxana, the title character, in this amusing and occasionally surreal teen comedy.

A man catches an owl and brings it home in a sack. His son, Honza (Jan Hrušínský), opens the bag and is startled not to find an owl but a beautiful, busty teenage girl. She begs not to be put in a cage.

This is a movie for kids but there are plenty of hints at adult humour. Occasionally, it almost seems to have great artistic ambition, as when Honza's head comes off in one scene and his headless body takes a plaster sculpture of Napoleon's head and places it on his shoulders. He paints it before going outside, as if that would help.

Saxana spends most of her time with three delinquent boys who con her into turning the school faculty into rabbits. There's a lot of transformation humour in this one.

The lyrics are from a newer Ghost song that I absolutely love. It sounds like a 90's stadium rock ballad, and I am here for it.



It's not my favorite--that's still a tie between Square Hammer and Peacefield, but it's up there. Sadly this wasn't one that they played in concert.

We did go up to York for BBQ and donuts. The BBQ was pretty good, but not something I'd drive 45 minutes again, but the maple frosted donut of my dreams made it entirely worth it. That should hold me until the Fall hits and there's maple everything again. I got a dozen, donuts (not all maple) and am happily nibbling them with my coffee. I got a dozen (They do a baker's dozen) but was a little indecisive about what to get. (They have a LOT of flavors.) It was $14, so I paid with a $20 and put the $5 change in the tip jar to make up for my waffling. They seemed so thoroughly shocked. As I walked out, happy as I could be, I heard the one hissing to the other "she left a five dollar tip," Followed by a chorus of thank yous. Which made me a little sad that that is a shocking thing. People should tip service people better.

Then we came home and enjoyed some donuts. We were supposed to go to the movies, but I was kind of wiped out, so we moved it to tonight and I relaxed for the rest of the day, save taking the puppy for a ride/walk. He's been getting better about it, but then my shoe squeaked, and he freaked out a bit, necessitating a ride to get him out of the building.

I think the higher dose of Prozac is helping some. He's definitely been a little more chill.

Today, I have a game at 12, and then I will go forth and see Fantastic Four. It'll get us back a bit late, but that's okay.

Yesterday was not horribly busy, but my manager sent me the file of people who needed appointments, and I watched for cancellations like a hawk. I managed to get some people in for appointments, including a kiddo, which made me feel good. I had to move someone to get the kiddo in, but it was 100% worth it to get them seen ASAP.

Tomorrow shall be busy, but hopefully not too bad. I've got a couple of people to reach out to in the morning about appointments that were misscheduled. Not by me, but I'm the go to when people are out and appointments need to be moved.

I'm debating on making breakfast today. My family always loves a Dutch Baby, and I could kind of go for one, too. I've got an enormous cast iron pan that I got primarily to make them. Jess doesn't like plain eggs, so I'm kind of shocked that they enjoy them, but they dig in just as much as the rest of us, and has in the past, requested them. I don't really have any good breakfast meat, though. The bacon I'd gotten from Costco was super salty, so I think I'm going to reserve that to cook in food to distribute the salt better. I was going to get a small Sam's club order, but I forgot. I could run up and get some, but that would be a pain, and they don't open til 10, so it would be cutting it super close to my game at 12. I might just have to make the bacon and deal with the salt.

Okay, I'm going to get myself together for the day. First up, drink the rest of this coffee and contemplate more donuts. Everyone have a sweet Sunday!

The Long Machine Conversation

How long has humanity been contemplating the dangers of AI? A couple days ago I was reading John Stuart Mill and I was surprised to come across this bit from his famous essay "On Liberty":

Supposing it were possible to get houses built, corn grown, battles fought, causes tried, and even churches erected and prayers said, by machinery—by automatons in human form—it would be a considerable loss to exchange for these automatons even the men and women who at present inhabit the more civilised parts of the world, and who assuredly are but starved specimens of what nature can and will produce.

And that was in 1859.

Mill was using the idea to illustrate how bleak it would be to have a world in which humans didn't carve out their own fortunes. "It really is of importance, not only what men do, but also what manner of men they are that do it. Among the works of man, which human life is rightly employed in perfecting and beautifying, the first in importance surely is man himself," he says. To Mill, it's incumbent on any human being to make of themselves the best example of a human being they can (he uses "man" and "men" and male pronouns to refer to humanity generally, as was the custom up until seventy or so years ago, but Mill was a noted feminist).

I like this bit:

Human nature is not a machine to be built after a model, and set to do exactly the work prescribed for it, but a tree, which requires to grow and develop itself on all sides, according to the tendency of the inward forces which make it a living thing.

I used to tell students to not look at life as a train track with just a series of predetermined destinations from which any deviation is a derailment. Instead, life ought to be seen as a large forest in which one can find different paths and opportunities in all directions. Obviously, Japan is well known as a country in which people follow prescribed life paths but somewhere in the philosophy behind the Japanese work ethic someone knew that's not enough. This is why the Japanese love sports so much and why so much care and attention is given to Japanese cuisine. The Japanese are masters of creature comforts. They have the most comfortable toilets in the world, the most efficient and friendly service staff.

Obviously, this isn't what John Stuart Mill had in mind. His idea of hard work for the purpose of self creation rather than for merely fitting in harmoniously with society is a fundamentally western idea and we can see it in both the best and the worst of what the west has produced. Yet many people in Japan are very concerned about AI.

Self-expression is important to me, not just my own but everyone's. I guess that's no surprise given that I'm an artist. I'm always excited by, and I do my best to encourage, students when they express themselves, artistically or otherwise, even on occasions when such expression is meant to insult me. It's these things, these trees "to grow and develop on all sides", that make up the forest of human existence.

But is there objective value in human accomplishment? Can we let machines do everything while we lounge poolside? I could speak to the compulsion for self-definition, to be noticed, to carve out an identity in society. But what if we chemically satisfied that compulsion? What if we had a combination of drugs and virtual reality aimed at satisfying that emotional need? Soma, essentially. Maybe it's time to read Brave New World again.

Suppose machines get to the point where they wonder about the worth of their own expression and accomplishment. Maybe I need to watch Blade Runner again. If we got to that point, when the AI is "more human than human", it could be simply a matter of one humanity abdicating for another. Perhaps current humanity is just the dying body cells to be replaced by another in a continually progressing organism.

I tried to take a walk this afternoon - but only made it around the block, the air was thick with an almost invisible orange tinted haze. It was like the sky had a slight orange tint to it - barely visible. And I found it hard to breath - as if the air was slightly dusty. (I may be more sensitive to allergens since my last bout with COVID? ) So I kept it short, and did floor exercises on the bed when I got home.

Read a bit this morning - making headway through The Rook - whose sense of humor, somewhat absurdist and witty, I appreciate. Overall I'm enjoying it. Although I edit various technical, financial and legal documentation for work, so I pick up on all of the writing and structural errors, which most people probably wouldn't pick up on. For example - it doesn't have clear transitions from one scene to the next. Also way too much reliance on italics. I kept thinking - how did this get published? And where the heck is the editor? Sleeping? I think that a lot reading traditionally published books that have been published within the last twenty years. Pre-21st Century Books seemed to be...I don't know, better edited? Smoother? There were exceptions of course - sigh best selling writers.

Talked to mother who is enjoying her stay in Seattle, with her cousin.
They hope to make it up to Mt Rainer tomorrow - mother's never been.

25. If you plan a trip away for leisure, what would be your ideal itinerary?

[I stole slaymesoftly's because honestly, it sounded appealing at the moment, with a few tweaks]

Comfortable transportation (preferably not involving flying, but....), interesting places to see, nice weather, pleasant company. A Viking river cruise maybe or Train Expedition either across Canada or the US or in Europe if I could get to it without hours spent in airports and on crowded planes. Actually, I've been flirting with US or Canadian train travel lately, also European. I like trains - it's my favorite and preferred mode of transportation. I can sleep, eat, drink, read, and write on trains without much difficulty, and no jetlag.

26. Have you seen any good TV drama series lately? What’s the last thing you watched?

Yes. I have a lot of streaming services and widely eclectic taste. So finding something is never an issue.

Today I saw Adolescence on Netflix and it blew me away. It's a British mini-series - only four episodes long, and each an hour in length - and damn. Gotta to give the Brits credit - they know how to tell a good story in a brief space of time.

I'd read about it, but for the most part went in blind. It's very intense, and each episode is a single camera shot. There are no cuts. I highly recommend it.

Also weirdly, White Lotus S3 - was much better than expected, and will haunt me as well. It's also hyper-realism. And no, you don't have to see the previous seasons to understand it. It's a black comedy, but I didn't find it funny? However, it kind of moved me at times.

And... The Bear on Hulu and F/X - S4 blew me away. S1-4 are all streaming on Netflix, they aren't long seasons, just 8-10 episodes each, I think. And very character focused. I find comforting and stressful at the same time - it's about a NYC chef who returns to Chicago after his brother's death to take over the family restaurant and turn it into a premiere Chicago establishment.

Just got out of a week intubated in the icu (not outta the woods but on the mend) and had lost my ability to walk I felt proud of being able to walk around as a fat person so I was embarrassed and described myself as ”weak as a newborn kitten” but when I thought about it I realized kittens come out pretty darn weak but they’re designed to develop into killing machines whch they do in short order yeah I got this. No plans to kill any one just, metaphors have power

Song Saturday - Set It Off

I’m sure I had another video I had in mind for Song Saturday as well as this one, but can I remember it? Nope.

But anyway here is Set It Off - Rotten. (Morning for flashing lights)



So Set It Off finally do another video! After having teases for prior ones that never came I felt Rotten would be the same. But they really ramped up the teasers for this one and I was kinda hyped, especially cause of the one blood.

Unfortunately this came out during the bad heatwave that made me sick so I watched it that first time in a daze. I had been meant to do a rewatch and kinda lost track. So figured song Saturday was a good excuse.

First the song itself. I like it, it’s heavier than their other stuff and i do like that (other than the bad egg voiceover at the end which feels random). I think on of my fav of the lines is about bodies rotting in the basement.

Onto the vid itself. The aforementioned flashing is a bit overdone (and probably didn’t help with the first watch. It’s a mix of the band performing in a space (feels like a garage or basement) with the lights flashing and then other scenes with the guys in hotel rooms.

The first shot of Maxx of him watching a screen has the vibe of him being hypnotised by it but… it doesn’t t go further than that for him whcih gahh it’s so frustrating. Zach’s goes a little further but again it’s too short. Of course Cody, being the singer gets the lions share (which yeah is standard singer gets most attention) but does feel frustrating especially since most of his is singing in front of a mirror until he spits out blood. Which yeah it’s a cool visual but I just wish it went further you know?

(I just wished Maxx did more than just stare at the screen and drum)

Other things now.

I kinda spent yesterday zoned out which was annoying. Maybe cause of being out Thursday but it felt my brain switched off a bit which was annoying.

There was a hasbro thing at comic con with figure announcements and I was hoping there’d be one of the two ones I hoped for (Qimir and ND-5) and ahhh! They’re finally releasing a Qimir! And ahhh he’s coming out this year! I’m so hyped I’m gonna get him as soon as preorders go up!

While there’s not an ND-5 figure there is gonna be a book featuring him out next year which is hype. I really need to get back to reading my Star Wars books though.

I have been on Donkey Kong Bananza some more and I did the forest layer, though now I have to go back to the freezer layer. It’s really odd though, of all the animals they could have chosen for the layer which is, as the name suggests, snow themed what animal do they go for? Zebra. That’s such an odd choice.

Also yay my MCC cards are finally on there way, yipee!

I’m hoping to post the fic on ao3 at some point today, if my focus is up to it. At least ao3 isn’t blocked by that stupid online safety nonsense.

But for now I’m gonna watch a random Murder She Wrote on tv before the Seapeekay stream. Though I just heard the other day there gonna be a reboot and Jamie Lee Curtis is gonna be Jessica Fletcher which… I’m not sure about.

As always I’m sure I’m forgetting something which will no doubt come to me later.

It's Saturday and it's going to be a busy day! I've got work, then we'll walk the dog, then we head out on our BBQ and donut odyssey, hopefully being back in time to get to the movies by 4. I'm a little bit worried about the timing. Hopefully, it'll be faster than Googlemaps was saying yesterday. It is a weekend, so I have hopes. If worst comes to worst, we'll push to a later movie.

Tomorrow will be a day of rest. I'm just going to chill out and relax.

Yesterday wasn't horribly busy, but the add ons kept me hopping. This morning, I'm going to see what I can do with our cancellations. I have the folder of people who need appointments, and I will see what I can do with it. Usually, Saturday is a big day for cancellations, and we're kind of drowning in Diagnostic Mammogram requests.

1. one place you volunteer (or would like to)? Why? This is a tough one. I've volunteered through work, to attend Pride and Transgender Pride, and I'd like to continue doing stuff like that. We had so many kids attend, and there we were, one of the most famous hospitals in the country, representing and saying that it was okay and we were there to help if they needed us. That felt like a powerful statement that I enjoyed making.

2. one book you'd like to see made into a movie? Why? That's a tough one. I'd like to see the Chronicles of Prydain get the full Lord of the Rings treatment, but that would be a tough sell, I think. So something a little less difficult, maybe one of Ursula Vernon's books. Nettle and Bone would be lovely, as would A Sorceress Comes to Call. I'm waiting for the movie Starter Villan, by John Scalzi, to be adapted. (Ryan Reynold's company is working on it.)

3. one creature (living, extinct, or mythical) you'd like for a pet? Why? I'm pretty happy with what I have. When the animals have all passed, we've talked about getting a big cat. Like a Maine Coon, and taking it for walks, but we'll see. Maybe I'd like a Quokka. They always look so damned happy.

4. one place on Earth you'd like to visit? Why? I'd like to visit Spain and Portugal, and maybe go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower. And definitely the Scandanavian countries. I have a friend in Spain and Finland, so I could go visit. Basically somewhere with socialized healthcare and good human rights. It would be a nice switch.

5. one talent or skill you'd like to develop? Why? I'm with [personal profile] dine on this one, I wish I was bi or trilingual. Spanish would be nice, and maybe Japanese or Arabic as well. I hate that I fall into the bucket of the American who requires people to speak only English to them. I really suck at languages, though. I have a really hard time learning them.

Tomorrow, I shall rest, and have a game at noon. Then, I'll make some dinner and go to bed early.

I backed a kickstarter of a new D&D game called "Monsters of Murka." It's set in a quasi modnern America, and it sounds hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out when the Kickstarter is over.

Davis and Dourif on Disney+

I continue to be amazed how quickly quality improved on The X-Files in its first season. I recently watched "Beyond the Sea" from January 7, 1994 which featured a couple notable guest appearances. It was Don Davis' first appearance as Scully's father and he's essentially reprising the Major Briggs role he played on Twin Peaks. How bitter Mark Frost must have been that he couldn't use Davis in Twin Peaks: The Return, that X-Files got all his good years.

I almost typed "Mark Snow" who's the composer for The X-Files. Frost is the Twin Peaks co-creator and Snow is the X-Files composer. Frost and Snow. They're just names, they don't mean there's a big conspiracy. Right?

"Beyond the Sea" features another David Lynch alum, Brad Dourif, who gives a showstopping performance as a medium on death row who gets to Scully. Dourif is a fascinating actor with a lot of great roles under his belt but it seems like he chose this episode of The X-Files to really go all out.



I like his subtle choice to switch accents.

Dourif retired from acting last year except he says he'll continue to provide the voice of Chucky from the Child's Play horror franchise.

It was well over 90 degrees today, got up to 96 with a heat index of 106. So, I think that translates as ...40 C, and 50 C? We weren't taught the conversions well when I was in school? They started to teach us - in or around the fifth or sixth grade, then decided it was too hard and gave up. (Basically the adults didn't understand it well enough to pass it down to the kids. When I state that the American Educational System is lacking, I'm not exaggerating.)

As a result of the heat, I went out in brief snippets. Luckily it wasn't that bad when I set off to work at or around 6:50 am. I got a matcha latte at Gregory's around 10 am, still not too bad. At noon - when I got a salad at Pret, it was around 90, and I was only out for about twenty minutes - ten were in Pret, and by the time I got back it was 92. It rained while I was on the train going home (it's air conditioned) and by the time I got off the train cooled down a tad due to the rain. So overall? Not too bad. I work near the harbor and the east river and South Brooklyn doesn't get that hot. (I live and work on islands. NYC is basically a series of islands. Manhattan, Staten Island, Long Island (encompasses Queens and Brooklyn), the Bronx, Governor's Island, Roosevelt Island, Liberty Island, Ellis Island. So the air smells like it does near water, and the weather acts the way it would near and around water. Having lived landlocked (with no water nearby), and near mountains but not water (Colorado Springs) - I can tell you I prefer living near water. It comforts me. I need trees, flowers, and water. Also grass. I do not need to grow it. I just need to be near it. )

Sigh, yes. I have a complicated love/hate relationship with fandom. Also, mixed feelings about being a fan myself. As a result of this? I tend for the most part to lurk on the outskirts of it, or jump in and jump out again. It's rare that I participate.

It's Friday! Whoohoo! One and a half more days left in my week! Then, I'm going to go do some shit.

Yesterday was a bit wild. I had to deal with a really difficult patient who didn't want to go to the main hospital. Unfortunately, due to past behavior, that was the only place we could accommodate them. They had some truly wild suppositions about how neurodivergence worked. She finally agreed to go, but goddamn. That was a long call. It wasn't my error, but I would prefer that I take that rather than one of my younger coworkers, who probably would have been driven to tears. I just shrugged and went "that's not how ADHD works at all?" (In my head, obv. I didn't poke that bear.)

Aside from that, two more Cardiac appointments opened up and required me to fill them, and it just felt busy. Then at the end of the day, I got to update windows, which is always fun. Apparently, I had 11.2hb2, and I needed 11.2hb3. Whatever. We'll see if everything works today.

After work, I made bacon and French Toast Casserole. The french toast casserole came out really well. I used croissant bread and I really liked it. It was delicious and custardy with brown sugar sprinkled on top to get crispy. The bacon was...okay. I had ordered from Costco, and I ordered the Kirkland bacon. I much prefer Sam's Club's bacon. It was very salty and also very fatty. I have like a centimeter of left over grease in my pan. It's just a lot. I have another package, and I think I will use it mostly for cooking. I'll get some kale or spinach and cook it up with some bacon and maybe parmesan.

Not sure what I'm going to make today. Going to have to look in the freezer. I think we have some brussel sprouts left, so maybe I'll use some of that bacon on them. Bacon, onions, and maybe some red wine vinegar. If I had sugar dusted pine nuts, I'd use that, too. I like that salty sweet with a little crunch. Mental note, get some pine nuts for future endeavors.

I'd like to bake something, but with the dog requiring a walk at lunch time, since he will no longer go out with Jess solo in the mornings, there's no time to throw together cookies during break. Maybe tomorrow evening I'll make some. Or Sunday morning before game.

Okay, time for me to go forth and get myself together. Everyone have a excellent Friday!

Thoughts on the new SUPERMAN

Based on early reviews, I went in predisposed to like the new Superman movie, and for the most part, I was very much not disappointed. David Corenswet stands out as excellent in a uniformly excellent cast, the script does a lot of very smart things with most of its characters, and Gunn's direction gives us a movie that moves along briskly and doesn't feel as long as its run time.

Finished watching White Lotus S3 over the weekend, and it haunts me.
It was much better than I expected. I'd fallen asleep during White Lotus S2, and couldn't get into White Lotus S1. The appeal of Jennifer Coolidge was lost on me, and I really didn't like the cast in the second season, they all grated on my nerves. I can't stand Michael Imperial. So I didn't expect to like S3, at all. But, it had a cast that intrigued me - Jason Issacs (Star Trek Discovery, among others), Walter Goggins (Fall Out, Justified), Carrie Coon (Gilded Age), Leslie Bibb, Natasha Rothwell, Scott Glenn (whose gotten old and looks skeletal), and Sam Rockwell. Plus numerous nominations.

I watched...and it was compelling. And haunting. Very dark comedy - I didn't find it funny. (I can't say I find any of the comedies nominated funny - maybe Hacks?) And it wasn't predictable - it actually surprised me.
I thought it would go darker than it did. And different people would die.

It does a good dissection of friendship and superficial relationships, or masking in relationships, where folks aren't authentic or genuine with each other, and lie with pasted on smiles, and grins that never quite leave their faces. The only ones who don't are in misery and wracked with pain.
And they all appear to be chasing pleasure, purpose and happiness which eludes them the more they try to chase it. There's an emptiness there, and a strong message about spirituality.

I was astonished how good Jason Isacs, Walter Goggins, and Carrie Coon were.

Started watching Great British Sewing Bee on Roku channel, which is kind of interesting? I'm not really a sewer, so some of it is lost on me. And it's more sewing focused than fashion focused?

19. Do you like spicy foods such as chilli peppers?

Yes on spicy foods. No on chilli peppers. I have to be careful. I like them, my esophagus and gut are more particular. Or they don't always like me. I accidentally took a small bit of the hottest pepper on the planet once, aka the Carolina Reaper - my lips burned for days. I didn't get it past them.
Avoid at all costs. The heat is in the seeds and juice. I mistook it for a different pepper and cut it up in a salad.

I can do spicy more than most. I like wasabi, sirachi, and tabasco for example. And put pepper (black pepper and red pepper crushed) on a lot of things, more than salt.

20. Are there any artisan food markets or farmer’s markets held close to where you live? Do you visit often?

Yes. Farmer markets are plentiful - Across the street from my work place every Tuesday (not big, but there), and about a twenty-thirty minute walk every Sunday from my apartment. Also lots of indoor artisan food markets. It's NYC. It has everything.

21. Have you ever traced your family tree?

Yes, fell down the rabbit hole with it once and traced all the way back to the 1690s Scotland and Britain, also 1690s in the US. How accurate it is, don't know. It's hard to verify anything further back than the 1700s. (Because the records don't survive). Germany was mostly destroyed in WWII, and the Native Americans, along with the African-Americans destroyed a lot of theirs for well, obvious reasons. France also lost a lot records in WWII. As did Spain.

But Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, and Britain in general - not a problem, they did a better job of preserving records, apparently.

It does get confusing the further back you go, and I gave up. I have relatives who are into it - though.

22. Do you know how to play backgammon? How about chess?

Yes to both. But haven't played in years, so it's unlikely I remember the rules or how. Last time was about ten years ago. I prefer backgammon, it's quicker. Chess takes forever.

23. Do you own a coffee machine? What’s your favourite type of coffee?

No. I can't drink coffee - only decafe, on occasion. The acidity and caffeine concentration make me ill.

24. How are you feeling today?

Tired and kind of spacy, also irritable. Sleep deprived. Going to bed now, in the hopes of remedying it.

1. one place you volunteer (or would like to)? Why? Animal shelter and the why is because I’m a huge animal lover. 

2. one book you'd like to see made into a movie? Why? There are so many sapphic books I’d like to see grace the big screen. I’d be happy with any of them. And why? I’m a lesbian who feels the sapphic community is sorely underrepresented in the TV and film industry. 

3. one creature (living, extinct, or mythical) you'd like for a pet? Why? I want a dog, but I have 3 cats that keep me busy currently. I will eventually have a dog though. Mythical? Dragon, hands down. Why for both? I love dogs and I think having a pet dragon would be epic. 

4. one place on Earth you'd like to visit? Why? The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Why? The most romantic city on the planet and I’m a hopeless romantic. 

5. one talent or skill you'd like to develop? Why? Probably singing or acting. Why? I’d like to try my hand at both. But I cannot carry a tune and I don’t think I’m animated enough to be an actor.
