Never Meet Your Heroes

Kate Bishop, a skilled archer whose overconfidence can cloud her judgement, lands in the middle of a criminal conspiracy. Meanwhile, Clint Barton's much-needed Christmas trip to New York City with his kids is interrupted when a painful part of his past resurfaces. It's just a matter of time till their paths cross, forcing Hawkeye out of retirement.

So I actually just finished Loki yesterday, and wow, one thing these Disney+ shows do well is their credit sequences that purple animation showing how hard Kate worked to get good at martial arts and archery was just phenomenal. I wonder if they'll keep it or change it up for the next eps.

I guess I didn't really expect this to be so much Kate's show, but I am pleased so far. I like her and the action/dialog has definitely set her up with a personality. I, as someone who also went home on holiday break to find a soon to be new stepmom in my house, can feel her pain.

I have no idea the significance of that watch.

I hope somebody gives that dog a bath and some flea medication.

Yeah, I didn't expect the show to be so much about Kate either. Then the title sequence was only about her and now I think we have another Falcon and the Winter Soldier here, showing us how someone new earns a familiar title.

Comparing Pizza Dog when he attacked that tracksuit guy to when Kate came back to her apartment, it looks like he already bathed himself. What a very good boy!

OH MAN I AM SO DISAPPOINT BY THE MUSICAL!! I thought it looked hilarious in the trailer, but seeing the longer cut was just kinda cringe. Having it so bad is kinda reality breaking for what we expect pop culture to be like in the MCU. Though seeing Clint react to the Black Widow actress was sad, but I was glad for the hearing aid joke. I too would have turned it off.

I didn't notice any colored contact lenses?

Hailee Steinfeld (whose eyes are brown) is wearing blue contact lenses, probably to make her look related to mom actress Vera Farmiga. It's easier to see in episode 2.

I always try to stay unspoiled so I knew nothing about the musical and also thought it was hilarious! I wrote up some thoughts about the first two episodes at my blog.

I like it a lot so far, and given that I was pretty sure going in that this was the handing of the Hawkeye torch on and Young Avengers setup I liked how much Kate it was. The title sequence was amazing. Kate sticking her nose in everywhere and getting in over her head was perfect, and I'm much more hopeful that the series will be good than I was at this point in Loki or FatWS.

I was a little disappointed in how much they changed Kate's backstory, though I can see why some of it was less workable, and it did set up how she acquired all those skills well. Offing Dad and Duquesne were definitely slow blink moments -- I really hope they aren't ditching Clint's circus backstory entirely. And possibly his pre-Blip vigilante/assassin career as well? Probably even the building in Bed-Stuy?

Yay for the tracksuit mafia who say Bro, though.

The musical was beautifully hideous, practically a callback to the USO show. Steve would have hated it so much, and kind of hope we get to see Bucky and Sam's reactions in the next Cap movie.

Kate is such a fun disaster! I think it'll be fun to cheer for her while enjoying the ridiculous things she gets herself into.

I didn't know anything about her comics background, I'll have to go look it up. I like comic's Clint's circus backstory, but I don't remember them ever mentioning where MCU Clint actually came from. I mean sure, superheroing is a rich person's business, but it'd be a change to have more like Shang Chi, y'know who had a day job.

The USO shows were fun though! Rogers: The Musical looked like a t-shirt wearing high school production. : ) I hope for a Bucky reaction to it too! It would definitely be grumpy!

I think I am super into this tracksuit mafia thing. I am tired of wearing nice pants to work!

I loved how hard they lean into the David Aja design aesthetic until I discovered that he's not being recognized or paid for it. Matt Fraction has a producer credit, which is nice.

Other nods - Kate's apartment design is similar to Clint's in the book, Clint using sign language (is there a chance we're going to have a silent episode? If so I am excite), Kate's bad-news parent
