Agatha being able to take even Wanda's magic was a nice shock, because then how could she ever be defeated? Wanda's dark hand creeped me out, though - gave me Harry Potter flashbacks. Nice Wicked Witch shot, heh. I hadn't expected the surprise car to work.
Whoa, of all the rest of the characters I really didn't expect white Vision to be the next one to come up. Phew, but next is the real Vision. The episode only just started and they're already trashing Westview.
Agatha comes back. And I was worried she would be gone for the rest of the show, ha. I mean, there's an awful lot to cover and the only way to do all the storylines justice would be to save some for later, I thought.
Oh god, finally Monica and Pietro! Nice room. Huh, mindcontrolled by Agatha, but he seems mostly harmless, phew! But keeping the characters apart is getting annoying.
Oh no, SWORD got Jimmy! But obviously he can help himself without superpowers. He even gets the villain to reveal his plan. "Flourish" he says after picking his handcuffs XD. God, I hope Marvel will give us more Jimmy.
"The Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged." Okay, so Wanda isn't a mutant. I can live with that. Didn't expect the people of Westview would be freed from mindcontrol by Agatha!
Monica finds a bill or something, I read Ralph and needed to pause. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? This is really not a good time to reveal Ralph is real. What if Ralph exists and he's the witness, I said. That would be funny, I said. I mean, I know I came into this ep with way too high expectations (The Peter ones: I would have liked a slow motion rescue scene [but could live without it], a least a solid hint towards the multiverse [if not having Darcy explain the concept], just some answers about his true identity, but most importantly I was hoping for a lovely Wanda/Peter sibling moment. You know, with him free of mindcontrol. And he has his own Wanda, he's bound to sympathize with our Wanda.), but come on! How did Monica get the upper hand in a fight against Pietro? Did he underestimate her and failed to pay attention? I didn't expect Monica to take this long to see that he's under mindcontrol (in the 1x07 mid-credits scene she was looking at him with her eyes still glowing). And I didn't expect that she could end it herself, nice! Okay, so either this identity revelation was straightforward disappointing or it was disappointing for now but with payoff later. Let's wander into the dangerous territory of hope (I try - but generally fail - to avoid it, because if there's one thing that's extra painful, it's getting your hopes up just to have them crushed again and again): WHAT THE FUCK! Out of all my ideas of what could still happen, Pietro being revealed to be the person in witness protection was the one I considered most out there (Why - unless you're an actor - would you have a photo with your name lying around? Folder with details on his new identity perhaps? And pretending to be scared of Monica might just be maintaining his cover and that's also why he didn't join the battle). Because WTF is he doing in this world?! Why would he need to be protected if he isn't even in his own dimension? In his own time? And why would he happen to live just 2 houses away?! This coincidence bothers me a lot - Agatha needed a Pietro for Wanda and he's right there?! But it has to be him, because why else would he have superspeed?! Superpowers aren't handed out by possession (unless maybe the person who does the possession possesses those powers). And that's the bit that keeps me from abandoning hope (even though it would be the right move). So here we have someone who has superspeed, looks like someone we know to have that power and we're heading for a multiverse story. What else are we supposed to conclude but that there's a revelation still outstanding? It feels like bad writing to bait us like that and then pretend there was nothing ever there. On the other hand it's entirely possible that this was bad writing without having to pretend, because there really was never anything there. That's the thing I suffered with Sherlock and I'm still not over it. They gave us the Fall and then failed to resolve it in a way that makes sense. From episode to episode we waited for the true resolution and it never came. I think that might have been my biggest ever fandom disappointment. But at least it taught me that creators are only people too and can fail worse than you'd expect. So maybe this is just Ralph Bohner. And my silly German self gets to appreciate that you could even translate that joke, because bohnern means polishing. But what a stupid and painful casting stunt that would be. No, you know what? I'mma have my cake and eat it too! It shall be my headcanon that this is Peter Maximoff, but that there's no forthcoming revelation.
I thought the Hex would break down, but Wanda starts to end it on purpose. I can't believe she didn't think it through before starting! Whoa, I didn't expect the Minimoffs would depend on the Hex too. I thought because they were born that meant their bodies could survive outside. Not the precious babies! How nice of Wanda to save the SWORD people who came to off her. "Boys, handle the military." Ahaha. Aw, look at Tommy being a little Peter clone! Monica giving Hayward orders is making my heart flutter. Show him who's boss! I'm glad to see her powers in action! But I dreamed of her getting more to do and even teaming up with Peter. We even get Darcy action! Shame that's the only thing she got to do here.
My god, I do love Vision approaching his fight with white Vision with logic. Diplomacy, an agreement! Huh, I thought white Vision (whom I was so ready to hate) getting his memories restored would be a step towards getting Vision's consciousness (or the Westview memories) into that body, but instead he just flies off. To do what? Off himself for being the target? Vanish until the plot calls for his return?
WANDA FIRED RUNES INTO THE HEX WALLS! What a brilliant move! Okay, unfortunately Agatha really is full-on evil, but it still creeps me out that Wanda is sucking up her powers. While I agree that trapping Agatha in her Agnes persona is cruel, it's pretty fucking rich of Agatha to complain about cruelty.
Yeah, so, speaking of cruelty... Wanda lost her parents, then her brother, then her boyfriend and is now losing him again and the kids too. That's just too much, how can she be okay after that?! Hey, I can derive hope from knowing that fiction tends to resurrect characters, especially if they've come back before (but that cheapens death so much), but where does she get her hope from? From being more powerful now than she was before the Hex?
Authority does indeed look good on Jimmy. Has he sent someone yet to check on his witness? Monica gets ungrounded, nice!
Ohhh, so that's why the credits were always mentioning New Zealand! THE MINIMOFFS! Good to know there's hope for them! But how the hell can they make contact? Are there other planes of existence??? And if Wanda can bring her babies back, what's to stop her from resurrecting Pietro and her parents?
Really enjoyed the finale and the season as a whole. Also love that they set up Monica for captain marvel 2 nicely. I am very curious what happened to white vision. He’s still out there, right?
Also, I loved the runes in the sky they were great, and wanda’s headpiece had a little M in the center that looked so very house of M, which was exciting for me. I had several theories that the ending of this show would somehow directly tie into mutants (I was half expecting a reverse house of M scenario) but maybe that’s still coming.
And yay for the kids still being around (somewhere!), figured they would be so young avengers can happen.
I had several theories that the ending of this show would somehow directly tie into mutants (I was half expecting a reverse house of M scenario) but maybe that’s still coming.
I'm trying not to hope for it too much, but I can't help it. I'm thinking we still might be heading that way (the reason there weren't proper hints to that might be that they wanted to pretend there were no loose ends, to make it a selfcontained show), that Wanda bringing about the end of the world actually means she'll fundamentally change it. It seems such a natural progression from all these MCU movies uniting their heroes to uniting the 'verses.
I am still processing this finale. Holy shit, WE GOT THE SCARLET WITCH AND SHE IS POWERFUL AND HAS SUCH A GREAT NON-SEXUALISED COSTUME. What a great conclusion, although I am so sad that Wanda had to give up her family and be alone all over again. I really hope that they don't villainise her or try and give her a split personality like they tend to do with Jean Grey/Phoenix. Please just let her own her magic and BE the Scarlet Witch.
I cannot believe this show has made me love Vision. "So long, darling." I didn't need my heart. And to find her standing in the vacant plot was just so gut wrenching.
The only thing I was disappointed by was the reveal of Fietro's true identity. Why couldn't they have had him NOT have an identity and have that be a little teaser for X-Men?
I know a lot of people believe Wanda should be locked up for taking a town hostage, but considering that the Avengers (and some faves) have always gone about destroying towns when fighting aliens (and not to mention Thanos destroyed the Avengers HQ and everything around it)... can we stop trying to say Wanda needs to be imprisoned when so many of the Ultimate Faves deserved it too? Being imprisoned for this type of stuff isn't within the MCU storytelling.
I'm just so glad that we got a women-led story and that it was SO GOOD. I cannot wait for Agatha to come back!
I hadn't even heard of viewers considering Wanda a villain until yesterday. Now I've seen it in 2 places and it worries me. It would be so fucked up if Wanda were to be turned into a villain, because that would make the message that being not mentally healthy makes you dangerous. Not to mention that Wanda is a witch, to make her evil would just smack of misogyny.
I've seen it theorised a few times. :/ People think Wanda = Chaos and Strange = Order, and that Strange will need to bring Order to Wanda's Chaos. I am hoping that this is not what's going to happen and that the focus on Wanda in Phase Four is bringing in the Multiverse, developing her powers (letting her actually learn to control them; let's not do the whole "You're evil!" speech from someone who does know the Scarlet Witch legend actually be gospel) and even the mythology of the Nexus Being.
I personally have no faith in filmmakers when it comes to mental health. Endgame was only a few years ago, and look at what they did to Thor. They treated his depression as a joke, all because a previously once fit man gained weight and fell out of his hygiene routine. I would hope Marvel would not go that way with Wanda (nor the split personality; this is so overdone and offensive with Jean) and just let Wanda own her magic and begin to control it. We all know Wanda is capable of it. (Why should a woman who is overpowered as fuck and more powerful than a man be villainised and told that her mental health = evil? No woman needs a man to make her "good".)
Sure sucks to be Wanda, being suspicious for having a power she didn't get to choose. Entropy is an integral part of nature (I love how that fits with being a witch), but just like death, she is met with hostility. I mean, on some level I understand it, but that wouldn't make her inherently bad, as she has a conscience and control over her actions - at least the conscious ones. I'd love to see Wanda actually developing her powers. I don't want that disappointment from lack of on-screen character development again that I got from suddenly seeing Bruce having sorted out his differences with his Hulk side (although kinda understandable in that case, as it was the ensemblest of ensemble movies).
Is Strange being a representation of order confirmed? I have yet to see that movie! But first I want to get that Peter meta and the required film/show-rewatching done.
I'm so tragically uninformed, I need a news aggregation site for WandaVision & co. (sorry to not just google it, but that would be going off on a tangent [and who knows for how long], since my mission is to reply to comments and that - as well as the other stuff I want to do - takes me a frustratingly long these days). Do we know yet who'll write/direct Multiverse of Madness? Maybe those people will handle mental health better or - if they're the same people as Endgame - they've learned something by now.
I have the same problem, shows and movies giving me a lot of feelings. They can't always be positive. *sigh*
I watched two episodes in a row so might get some 1x08 mixed in.
* Flashback of a woman being accused of being a witch, then answers affirmative and turns out it's a whole dang coven of ladies. Very nice twist on it! (also mama!witch's power crown was hella cool)
* Wicked Witch reference with the shoes under the house. Heh.
* Oh god, that lady pitching storylines so her little girl could leave her room and she could hug her again 😭 "When you let us sleep, we have your nightmares." So. Many. Yikes.
* Figures Vision would be able to logic the other Vision out of being a big dumb warmachine.
* Pietro is now pissing me off. Exactly the same actor and with the same personality traits, and it's not the X-Verse one? C'MON. That was real cheap.
Not to mention Agatha can't give people super powers, I don't think. The first ep can be explained away by Wanda rewriting reality because of course she wants her brother back. But then she rejected it, and even says in the previous episode that he's not really their uncle. So shouldn't his speed powers have disappeared with the next rewrite? HE MAKES ZERO FUCKING SENSE.
* Agatha's "you're not sorry. You're cruel." line and Wanda's small smirk in response 😘
* I didn't think she'd be able to let the kids go. That's a tough one to take on the chin. I get they needed closure for the story, but she could clearly expand and shrink her hex at will.
* "We'll say hello again." 😭😭😭
* I was SO MIFFED when they announced Monica for WandaVision because no, she belongs in Captain Marvel! Then relieved, as the show was clearly a one off and setting Monica up to gain her powers. But now the ending has me half concerned she's being drafted for the Kree Secret War series. Hrrm. Carol better get to hug her lesbian love child at some point :/ and Lao get yelled at
* Monica with powers and stubbornness and I LOVE HER A LOT.
* They used the same sound clip of her kids crying for her in the end scene as in the basement. Would have preferred they used an older voice maybe? We know they'll probably be back for Young Avengers.
* I love that we have witches and covens and grimoires in the expanded MCU now.
I can't believed you managed to watch these 2 depressing eps in a row!
I know, right? Pietro is so very clearly Peter (I just noticed that at one point he even mouthes a word like he does in the X-Men prequels)! But at least one thing makes sense now: They're fucking with us - that's why he's called boner!
Oh no, I was worried that the kids calling for Wanda's help was reused, I didn't dare check. I don't want this to only have been a memory.
- Wanda beating Agnes by enchanting the runes on the hex. - Vision getting into a philosophical debate with White Vision, who I assume we'll see again. It's the WandaVision equivalent of killing off Gamora and then having a slightly younger Gamora join the team in the very next film. - Jimmy saying "flourish" when he got himself out of his handcuffs. What a dork. - Monica showing Wanda the compassion and forgiveness she desperately needed. - Emma Caulfield! She's so gorgeous. The fact that her character is named after an historical figure from the Salem Witch Trials is extra delightful. If anyone is interested, she spoke to Vanity Fair about being a deliberate red herring, here!
Things I didn't love:
- fucking Hayward. What a badly written, weak ass villain. All the little moments of him pointing out that it is hard to live in a world that's constantly turned into a battleground by superheroes etc - and any sympathy he might have garnered by living through and being in charge after the blip; dude certainly didn't ask for giant purple Josh Brolin to come down from space and kill half of everyone - were completely eroded by the end. They could have made him nuanced and sympathetic, even with his ambitions; they didn't. In a story about the multifacets grief, it's a letdown.
Anyway! Thank you all for coming on this journey with me, I really enjoyed reading everyone's comments.
Here's one last gift - it's Agatha All Along but in Animal Crossing. ♥
Yeah. Hayward was such a one note villain at the end. The could have had him paranoid about future threats, or bitter and suspicious of super heroes because of what happened. Instead we got "mwhahahaaa they'll sure promote me and give me money now that I made a super weapon for them!"
