Disney sure is ramping up their plans for Marvel and Star Wars content, huh? Hopefully this community can serve as a meeting ground for people wanting to talk about all the new shinies.

Some basic guidelines:
* General courtesy, please. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. (make back button, not war, my pals ❤️)
* Comments make the fandom go round. See something you like, let em know!
* Any and all spoilers go beneath a cut, and are marked as such. This includes casting information and trailer reactions. Mild spoilers for episodes that have been out for over a week is ok.
* If posting icons, post up to four teaser icons, the rest after the cut/following the link. Spoilers count in icon-form as well, so no icons from episodes less than a week old outside of a cut, please.
* No graphics bigger than 400x400 outside of cuts.
* Any and all content is welcome for new or old Disney+ shows related to Marvel and Star Wars. (Fics, art, recs, meta, vids, graphics, discussion & question posts, reviews and general thoughts, podfic, crafts, resources, news, promoting challenges and exchanges related to Disney+ shows, etc. We may have to reconsider our approach to fic if we start to get a lot of fic announcement posts.)
* Tagging is strongly encouraged (organization! woo \o/).
* No AI fanworks.
* Do not post content made by others, but please do link to it. Sharing is caring <3

If you have any questions, ask away. And if you’d like to sign up to do episode reaction posts for a show, or maybe organize a rewatch of something? You are more than welcome to here.

I’d also love a co-mod or two. Hit me up!

For the final three episodes of Andor, which were quite good, the curious decision to bring a new writer to the series, Tom Bissell, was made. It wasn't a bad idea, it turns out. Bissell is best known for writing video games, according to Wikipedia. Maybe that gave him a good instinct for kinetic suspense.

Wow. Could there be anyone who wasn't pleased with last night's trio of new Andor episodes? I, for one, was captivated. They were written by Tony's brother Dan Gilroy who wrote the Aldani heist arc in the first season. Back then, I wondered if Dan was not a better writer than his brother. Now I really think he is.

The show can coast now, these three did the job. But I'm eagerly looking forward to next week anyway.

Now I've watched "What a Festive Evening", episode six of Andor season two, a nice little symphony of suspense. As I noted yesterday, the writer of this arc, Beau Willimon, wrote the prison arc last season, which was stronger than this because it revolved around one man's life changing and it was done with an extraordinary performance by Andy Serkis. But "What a Festive Evening" was by no means bad.

I only had time to watch two of the three new episodes of Andor last night but that sure wasn't a reflection of their quality. I thought the two I watched were better than the first three. Written by Beau Willimon, who wrote the prison story arc last season, this new one is the most the show has felt like a spy thriller.

I still have no internet in my apartment but I was excited enough for the new episodes of Andor that I trudged all the way to the manga cafe to watch them last night. Mostly, I was not disappointed, though nothing in the three episode premiere has approached the highest points of the first season. It's just nice watching a Disney+ show that feels real, like something writers sat down and thought about how to make a good story for rather than something produced by a committee from a venn diagram of corporate and political interests.

Last night's finale of Daredevil: Born Again felt largely like a setup for season two. I guess that's not surprising given the troubled production history that saw the show handed from one creative vision to another. There were aspects I liked about the finale but somehow it all added up to something less satisfying than the finales on the original Daredevil series.

That's the jazz standard referenced by "Isle of Joy", the new Daredevil from Wednesday. The episode basically satisfied me, even when a few things happened I thought were silly.

What Art?

Okay, I guess I can't put off writing about Wednesday's Daredevil any longer. I hate writing negative reviews but in for a penny, in for a pound. It's particularly disappointing because I had high hopes for this show. Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk is truly one of the best things about not just the MCU but comic book film and television of the last thirty years. But once again, Disney was under the impression they could cut corners in one of the most essential aspects of any production: the writing.

"Art for Art's Sake" (Walter Pater is rolling in his grave) was written by Jill Blankenship who also wrote the abysmal episode three, "The Hollow of His Hand", so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Two new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiered on Disney+ last night and the contrast between the two of them most tellingly shows the difference between the show as it was originally filmed and the show as it was retooled. Episode five feels like it fits with the bulk of Marvel Disney+ content while episode six feels much closer in tone to the Daredevil Netflix series. You can as plainly see the reason for the retooling as episode six is far and away the superior of the two. But I found episode five's echos of Disney+'s previous Marvel content to be unexpectedly depressing. I imagined what could have been if that streaming universe had been of higher quality.

What a difference a week makes. The fourth episode of Daredevil: Born Again was so much better than the third, it was like night and day. Mind you, it wasn't perfect. The writing was good and the performances were very good but the direction felt odd at times and the music overenthusiastic. I suspect the problems here were due to this being a Frankenstein's monster episode, with pieces from the original incarnation of the series not quite fitting with the new version.

The episode has two credited writers, David Feige and Jesse Wigutow. I suspect David Feige (who, it seems, is not Kevin Feige's brother) was brought in after the show was restructured and that Wigutow was the original writer. This Feige has the distinction of being an actual lawyer and you can very quickly see the difference in quality. This is the kind of person both She-Hulk and Daredevil: Born Again ought to have hired from the beginning if they really had their hearts set on being lawyer shows.

Good grief, last night's Daredevil: Born Again was bad. It's no wonder even Disney realised the show needed to be drastically retooled--this was clearly an episode from before Dario Scardapane was brought in. It might be too little too late, though, given how weak the show's been in the ratings. Why, Disney? Why don't you value writing?

It's finally here; the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiered on Disney+ last night. It doesn't really hit the ground running, in fact these two episodes have a real swiss cheese quality with lots of holes. But showrunner Dario Scardapane, who came in to reconfigure the show after half of it had already been shot by a showrunning team Disney decided was inferior, may well fill those holes with--I don't know, brie, pimento, something good. Scardapane was a writer on Punisher, a show within the same formerly Netflix MCU universe. So he probably knows what he's doing and, by the way, don't watch Daredevil: Born Again until you've seen the first three seasons of the old Daredevil (I wouldn't read the rest of my review, either, if I were you).

The final episode of Skeleton Crew aired last night and, due to the show's extraordinarily low ratings, people are saying it's the last of the series rather than merely the season. I found the episode frustrating and out of touch with itself but I can see what was trying to say, that the show itself had actual ideas and themes its creators, John Watts and Christopher Ford, were working through, which is more than I can say for The Acolyte, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. So, while I think the show was misfire, I do think it had good aim.

Jon Watts and Christopher Ford returned to pen last night's penultimate episode of Skeleton Crew. It was kind of odd because I recognised the story beats of a kids' adventure story from the '80s and Treasure Island and felt like I ought to be enjoying it. Unfortunately, I still feel like the show is out of touch with how sympathy works.

I almost forgot about watching Skeleton Crew on New Years Day. It was a thirty minute episode that didn't seem to cover much ground. It was the second written by newcomer Myung Joh Wesner but it was directed by Bryce Dallas Howard. People seem to think she's a good director for these shows but I continue to find her work unremarkable.

This week's new Skeleton Crew was the first one not written by Christopher Ford and Jon Watts. It's the first of two written by Myung Joh Wesner, another in a trend of Disney hiring inexperienced writers for their shows--Wesner's only two previous credits are for shows called High Potential and Death and Other Details, both series having been released in 2024. She has a web site which includes brief synopses of a number of unproduced scripts. She brags about her perfect spelling in her bio. Her Skeleton Crew episode wasn't so bad and definitely felt like she did her homework, which I assume was watching The Goonies twenty times.

Last night's new Skeleton Crew was fine, I suppose. It mostly felt like filler, which is odd considering it was directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, writers and directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once. This is their follow-up to that awards darling? Well, okay. It was written, once again, like most episodes of the series, by Christopher Ford and John Watts.

The third episode of Skeleton Crew is definitely an improvement on the previous two despite being directed by David Lowery, director of that detestable adaptation of The Green Knight from a couple years ago. At the same time, I'm getting a better sense of the show's fundamental flaws.

I'm not really sure if Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is a good show. I didn't like the trailers and watching the first two episodes didn't raise my enthusiasm. I didn't like the concept of '80s American suburban kids in the Star Wars universe and the show has done nothing to convince me I should. But, on the other hand, if you do like the concept, it's entirely possible you'll like the episodes. They have a basic competence in their execution. They come from John Watts and Christopher Ford, the minds behind Spider-Man: Homecoming, and I did like that movie.

Why can't I get behind this concept? It seems only natural. Elliot in E.T. and a few other kids in those many junior high school aged stories of the '80s were seen playing with Star Wars toys. What could be more natural than putting such a kid in a Star Wars story? Oddly, it drains the show of nostalgia because, unlike Stranger Things, older viewers like me can't look at what the kids are interested in and say, "Oh, wow, I remember liking that." These kids like Jedi and Jedi is all they know. It's not just the nostalgia, it kind of shaves the tree down to the trunk. There's no sense of fullness to it. Like a lot of Disney Star Wars stuff, the galaxy it depicts feels very small and the odd similarity to '80s suburbs makes it feel even smaller.

The elephant kid is kind of cute. Maybe this show will win me over, I don't know.
