Ms. Mess

What a mess. And a tragic mess when you consider how charming Ms. Marvel was in its first few episodes. But last night's finale was a meaningless hodgepodge, utterly failing to capitalise on any organic buildup from within the series. It did have a couple of cool moments but mostly it felt like such an incoherent rush to the finish line it hit almost Benioff and Weiss levels.

Most of the series was written and directed by Muslim women but last night's script mysteriously came entirely from white guys with tiny imdb pages. As though someone at Disney panicked and said, "Oh no, we need white guys, any white guys will do!" Story credit goes to Will Dunn, apparently not the same Will Dunn who had a role in the Harry Potter movies, while the teleplay is by Dunn along with A.C. Bradley and Matthew Chauncey. A.C. Bradley wrote one episode of Arrow and he and Chauncey worked on an obscure cgi series called Tales of Arcadia. So in case you were worried about Disney's money, don't worry, they didn't spend very much of it on writers.

And where was series creator Bisha K. Ali? Well, one can hardly blame her for not returning to the finale for a show that by this point bears very little resemblance to the one she created. After only six episodes.

Last night's new Ms. Marvel bit off way more than it could chew, essentially trying to be Doctor Zhivago in the space of about thirty-five minutes. The resulting blend of political drama, romance, and bildungsroman ended up feeling more like an outline or trailer than a proper story in itself, an all too common problem with Disney+ shows.

What started as a charming series about a teenager getting superpowers seems to have been hijacked by too many big ideas competing for space. It's a shame because when this show was focused on Iman Vellani's earnest performance it was pretty good.

I wonder if the title of last night's new Ms. Marvel, "Seeing Red", was meant as a nod to all the show's similarities to Turning Red. But the episode actually had less in common with that Pixar movie than previous episodes did. At its best, "Seeing Red" is kind of cosy. At its lowest points, it was a bit muddled and inert.

So finally, in the last episode, Obi-Wan Kenobi got on its feet. The show and the character. Credit, I think, really needs to go to John Williams, Andrew Stanton, and the actors. Prominent problems still exist in the teleplay and definitely in Deborah Chow's directing. But on the whole, it was a win. Meanwhile, like a seesaw of quality, when Obi-Wan improves, the normally delightful Ms. Marvel diminishes. I'd hardly call Ms. Marvel episode three a total disaster but it was definitely outshone by the Star Wars series this time.

Last night's Obi-Wan Kenobi was an improvement over previous episodes but still quite a few problems linger and a few more are introduced. Meanwhile, it was once again outshone by Ms. Marvel and the radiant Iman Vellani.

Meanwhile, on the second episode of Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan continues to be adorable. I want to see a team-up with her, Hawkeye 2, and Black Widow 2. I figure they could call themselves the Kitten Avengers. It's absurd Kamala is going to have to share a screen with Captain Marvel and Monica Rambo. That's like teaming Tom Cruise with D.B. Sweeney and Sam Worthington. It's like A+D+D.

Last night Disney premiered a new Marvel series and a new episode of a Star Wars series, Ms. Marvel and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Surprisingly, Ms. Marvel turned out to be the much stronger of the two, but maybe that's just because my expectations were so low for it.

But first, I want to talk about Obi-Wan Kenobi. I think the hard truth we have to face is that this series, quality-wise, is about on par with The Star Wars Holiday Special. Think about it. It has the big stars in their famous roles but written by people who don't really seem to understand the characters, being more intent on just hitting the bare minimum necessary dramatic beats to tell something that can be called a story. The hair and makeup look odd, the music's not nearly as good, and there's an overall lack of a sense of grandeur that's one of the cardinal virtues of the Star Wars films.

After Obi-Wan Kenobi, I struggled with whether or not I wanted to watch Ms. Marvel. I hated Captain Marvel so why would I want to watch a show about a Captain Marvel fan girl? Well, as it turned out, Iman Vellani as the titular protagonist of the series outshines Brie Larson in every way. She's sassy with the audience and has better access to her own emotions. She has a sense of comedic timing and the ability and courage to seem really wounded.

We don’t have any official images yet for a lot of the shows, but a few of the characters have appeared in multiple comics. And over the years, even in a few of my icons ☺️

I'm very much a casual comics fan, so not a wealth of knowledge in the area. And so I went a lookin!

5 comics to pick up for WandaVision
If you can’t wait for WandaVision’s launch, we’ve rounded up five of the best Wanda and Vision stories for you to read right now. These series look to provide lots of useful context for some of the events viewers may see on the show while also providing a deeper insight into what makes the relationship between these two characters so compelling.

5 Comic Books To Read Before Watching Marvel’s Loki on Disney+
Here is a list of five Loki comic books that I think you should read before watching the show on Disney+ in May! Some will most definitely tie-in to the show, and others are just really great Loki stories.

Moon Knight: 10 Comics To Read In Preparation For The Disney+ Show.
Marc Spector/Moon Knight is not the most well-known comic character outside of his own fanbase, which could make some fans curious about the mysterious Lunar Legionnaire and his unique take on vigilantism, so we've put together a helpful guide for anyone looking to explore the rich comic history of Moon Knight before he joins the MCU.

10 Hawkeye Comics to Read Before the Disney+ Series.
Bishop has become a fan favorite, appearing in hundreds of comics since her premiere in 2005. Barton, introduced as a villain in 1964, has been avenging on the page since 1965. In addition to Bishop taking up the Hawkeye mantel so the geriatric archer can ride off into the proverbial sunset, she’s also supposed to appear in the MCU’s take on the Young Avengers—Marvel Studios has A LOT of story to tell. In preparation for the Disney+ series (and what will potentially be adapted), we’ve rounded up 10 Hawkeye comics to better acquaint yourself with this pair’s history. (aww bro, I should re-read Aja's Hawkeye.)

Alternately, Disney+'s Hawkeye: 10 Kate Bishop Comics To Read Before Watching The Show.
Kate Bishop. She's pretty much an Avenger.

5 Comic Books To Read Before Watching The Falcon And The Winter Soldier.
Here are 5 comic books that I think could have potential tie-ins to the series, but even if they don’t, they are totally worth reading. (I can vouch for Falcon & Winter Soldier Volume 1 being a fun, bantery ride, with pretty art.)

Couldn't find an article for Kamala Khan, but outside of team books, I can absolutely attest to the excellence of her original run: Ms Marvel by G. Willow Wilson. You get her origin story and how she grapples with her new powers, as well as spend some time with her lovely family. (also has a wealth of options if you're looking for physical copies). Saladin Ahmed took over the writing duties for Kamala's next solo outing, Magnificent Ms. Marvel, and he's just now wrapping it up (I've seen nothing but good things).

I think that covers all the Marvel shows we're likely to see in 2021(probably not Moon Knight but he had an article so 🤷🏻‍♀️). Do you have any comic arcs you'd like to shine the spotlight on?
